There are two very different things which are both called technical management degrees and it's important to make sure which you want to do. The first is an education in the technology of management itself. This would probably be a Bachelor's degree and would teach you the nuts and bolts of the techniques of management itself. Planning, running projects, the basics of human resource management and how to motivate and direct teams. The second type that shares the same name is in the management of technical areas of business. Things like managing the IT requirements, or the design teams: how to manage in a highly technical environment, if you like. This second type of technical management degree is something usually recommended for you if you're already an expert in the field itself, and want to move from simply doing projects to managing them.

What you'll learn and what it can do for your career. Both types of technical management degrees help you to climb that career ladder by teaching you how to manage teams and deliver projects on time and to budget. The difference between the two is that the first type teaches you how to be a manager in general and the second how to manage in a specific technical environment. The need for this difference is that it's entirely possible to manage a production department, or marketing, or sales, using the more general rules of the science of management. But it's almost impossible to manage the IT department without a deep understanding of IT itself. That's why for the latter, it's usual to take an IT specialist and encourage them to learn management. |
